Planning and Community Development

This Department is responsible for overall planning responsibilities in the city in coordination with the building department. This department is also responsible for administrative support to the Planning and Zoning Commission and Board of Adjustment. This office implements the procedural tasks required to implement zoning code amendments, special exceptions and variances. This office is responsible for setting up meetings for Planning and Zoning board and Board of Adjustment meetings, taking the munutes of those meetings, sending out required documents and providing general staff service support to the City Administrator's office.

Business Licenses

The Community Development department is also responsible for administering the business license program.

Any person or entity that endeavors to carry on, conduct or engage in any business trade, occupation or profession within the City of Apalachicola is required to obtain an annually renewed business license. All business licenses expire on Setember 30 of each year. Businesses are responsible for the timely filing of their business license renewal form and fees. If the due date for payment falls on a Saturday or Sunday or a federal, state or city-observed holiday, then payment is considered timely on the following business day.

Businesses that do not meet the renewal deadline are required to pay penalty fees. Those licenses not renewed by October 1 of each yea shall be considered delinquent and subject to a delinquency penalty of 10 percent for the month of October, plus an additional 5 percent penalty for each month of delinquency thereafter until paid. The total delinquency penalty shall not exceed 25 percent of the occupational license fee for the delinquent establishment.
